|Dead End Poet's Society™|
The Babula Children's Garden includes a very large hedge maze that has 78 dead ends. We plan to have something in each of the dead ends, a bench, an activity, something about mazes and more. Our first activity is a competition for K-6 students throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Beginning in 2007, each spring we have held a competition in the schools for the best poem written about a specific gardening theme. A panel of judges made up of GBG staff, student interns and poets choose winners each year. Their poems are "published" on displays in one of the dead ends as well as in GBG newsletters.
In addition to student poetry, we also have a competition for students to illustrate a park bench with a well known work by a nationally recognized poet. Our first member of the Dead End Poet's Society Distinguished Poet is Serge LeCompte, formerly an instructor at UAF, and the list now includes Shel Silverstein and Anna Grossnickle Hines. We are honored to have them as part of the Dead End Poet's Society and will add more poets in coming years. Read their poem and see the bench design in the distinguished poet's corner.
